"Loran's Dance." Sampled by everyone from Beastie Boys to Fatboy Slim and DJ Shadow, the track is certainly the highlight of Power of Soul. The 1974 album from Idris Muhammad, however, contains so much more, each cut full of that signature groove the jazz percussionist is so respected for. "Piece of Mind" is a deep piece of jazz soul, and the slightly uptempo "The Saddest Thing" is also a moving fusion number. Produced by Creed Taylor, features Joe Beck on the guitar, Randy Brecker on the trumpet, and Grover Washington, Jr. on the saxophone, with arrangement and keys courtesy of Bob James. Recommended.
