The Story
Raphael Saadiq, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Dawn Robinson (later replaced by Joi) are Lucy Pearl, and this is the group's self-titled debut (and only album), originally released in 2000. R&B at the time consisted of drum machine / synths / and/or sample-heavy sounds, but members (former in case of Saadiq) of Tony! Toni! Tone!, A Tribe Called Quest, and En Vogue create a warmer, more organic record that pays tribute to the more soulful roots of the genre. Elements of hip-hop, disco, & rock effortlessly blend throughout the album, with Q-Tip and Snoop Dogg making guest appearances on one of the stand out tracks, "You." "Dance Tonight" (as featured on Love & Basketball soundtrack!) and "Don't Mess with My Man" are other highlights.
